General Tao with fried tofu

Preparation

Cut the tofu block into cubes. Coat evenly with cornstarch, garlic salt and pepper.

Heat a small amount of vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet. When hot, add the first cube to check if the oil is ready. Add the remaining cubes. Fry over medium-low heat until crisp and golden. Set aside on paper towels.

In a bowl, mix the soy sauce ingredients with the Sambal Oelek.

In a separate skillet, heat sesame oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute.

Add the liquid mixture and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and stir in the cornstarch mixture to thicken. Stir until a thick sauce forms.

Add the fried tofu cubes to the pan with the sauce and gently coat the pieces.

Serve with basmati or jasmine rice and a sautéed green vegetable.

Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.
