General Tao with fried tofu

What you need

Ingredients (4 servings)

For the crispy tofu:

1 package of Unisoya tofu, 454 g

½ cup cornstarch

Garlic salt, to taste

Ground pepper

Vegetable oil for frying

For the sauce:

¼ cup soy sauce

3 tablespoons rice vinegar

2 tablespoons maple syrup

2 tablespoons hoisin sauce

1 tsp Sambal Oelek

1 tablespoon sesame oil

2 minced garlic cloves

2 tablespoons chopped fresh ginger

2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed in ¼ cup water

 

For garnish :

2 green onions

Sesame seeds

The instructions

Cut the block of tofu into cubes. Coat them evenly with the cornstarch.

Heat a little vegetable oil in a nonstick skillet. When warmed, add a first cube to check if the oil is ready. Add the rest of the cubes. Fry over medium-low heat until the pieces are nicely crispy and golden. Reserve in absorbent paper.

 

In a container, mix the ingredients of the soy sauce until the Sambal Oelek.

In another skillet, heat the sesame oil over medium heat. Add the garlic, ginger and continue cooking for 1 minute.

Add the liquid mixture and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and stir in cornstarch mixture to thicken. Stir until you get a thick sauce.

Add the fried tofu cubes to the pan with the sauce and coat gently the pieces.

Serve with basmati rice or jasmine rice and a sautéed green vegetable.

Garnish with sliced ​​green onions and sesame seeds.
